According to PetCareRx, The majority of hemoprotozoan parasites, which can cause anaemia, are intracellular in erythrocytes or white blood cells. Therefore, a standard thin blood smear can be used to evaluate erythrocyte abnormalities and look for parasites. During an acute infection, parasites are most likely to be found in blood smears. Immunologic or molecular diagnostic methods are typically more sensitive if infections become chronic because parasitemias can fall below thresholds that can be detected by light microscopy.
