Dr. Gold is the elected President of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. This is the regulatory body that licenses all veterinarians in the province, oversees the accreditation of animal hospitals, and governs the profession in this province.
Dr. Gold grew up in North York, then a suburb of Toronto. His family dog, a chocolate miniature poodle named Nevaire, was diagnosed with severe epilepsy, and would suffer seizures that could last 45 minutes to an hour. Caring for Nevaire and comforting his family after his passing inspired Dr. Gold to become a veterinarian. After high school, Lorie attended the University of Toronto for the first year of his undergraduate studies before transferring to the University of Guelph, where he received his BSc and DVM degrees. After working in a number of companion animal hospitals to build experience, he founded the Animal Hospital of River Oaks in 1989 and has been running it ever since!
As a veterinarian, Dr. Gold enjoys spending time helping people—he considers himself an educator and spends a lot of time teaching families about their pet’s health. For eleven years Dr. Gold has been a voluntary instructor at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, where he coaches veterinary students. He also gets a great deal of pleasure performing surgery, and likes internal medicine cases as well. Dr. Gold was a founding member of the Canadian Veterinary Dental Society and has been practicing advanced veterinary dentistry for almost 20 years.
While studying at the University of Guelph, , Lorie met the most wonderful woman he has ever known, his wife Sarah. Their son Alexander graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Microbiology, and spent six months teaching High School Science in Thailand! After returning from Thailand, Alexander completed his second degree at the Faculty of Education at Western University, then he taught in England for 2 years, and now has returned to teach with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. Alexander also travels extensively with his work associated with an underwater Robotics company.
Dr. Gold and his wife have a Standard Poodle named Schooner, Sailor, a Golden Retriever and Pirate, their cat. A parrot, Marcus, rounds out the pet family.
Dr. Gold is a licensed pilot, martial artist, scuba diver, sailor and skier who also enjoys traveling with his family. He teaches at the Oakville YMCA and is a volunteer instructor in a course for 1st and 2nd year veterinary students at the University of Guelph! Dr. Gold is also an interviewer for admissions for the Ontario Veterinary College, helping to select students that get into the veterinary medical program to become veterinarians.
Dr. Gold is the former Chair of the Accreditation Committee, of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, the committee that oversees the inspections of veterinary hospitals, All veterinarians in Ontario must work out of accredited facilities, and all veterinary facilities must meet the standards set by this committee and the council. Dr. Gold is a past member of an international advisory group that meet regularly by teleconference. The group, known as the Innovation and Technology Advisory Group had members from Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Dr. Gold was also an invited participant at the recent first ever Future of Veterinary Medicine conference held in Guelph. The opportunity to "give back" to the profession and to help guide the profession into the future gives Dr. Gold great pleasure, as his life has been dedicated to both his family and this amazing profession.
