Nutrition & Weight Management

Ever hear the expression, “You are what you eat”? Well, that very same theory could easily be applied to our animal friends. Many otherwise caring and responsible pet parents choose their pet’s food based on the wrong factors, such as cost or flavor. Others just pick blindly, simply because they are overwhelmed by the number of options or are unfamiliar with how to interpret the information on the package.
The truth is, your pet’s nutrition is less about what their preference may be and more about selecting a balanced diet that will bring out their very best and help them achieve optimum health. Yet, unless you’ve been trained in animal nutrition, determining what food would be best for your particular pet, along with what weight range would be ideal, can be quite a challenge.
At Animal Hospital of River Oaks, we understand pet nutrition. We can determine your pet’s precise needs and then develop a customized plan that will help meet those needs most effectively.
We’ll start by pinpointing your pet’s unique nutritional needs based on a thorough exam and a number of specific health factors. Things such as your pet’s breed, age, current weight and the existence of any medical conditions all play a role in determining what types of food products would best support their wellness. We can then use this information to provide recommendations on what food, as well as how much and how frequently, you should be feeding your pet for optimum results.
Next, we’ll use the information we gathered in our nutritional analysis to identify what weight range would be ideal for your pet. Companion animals that are even just a few pounds overweight are at a higher risk of developing a number of serious, sometimes life threatening medical conditions. Conversely, if your pet is underweight, he or she may be more susceptible to illness or injury. We’ll establish a goal weight for your pet and then work with you to develop a plan that will help them achieve and maintain that weight over time.
Finally, from time to time we’ll revisit your pet’s nutrition and weight management plan to make sure it’s still as effective as it was designed to be. As animals age, their bodies change and so do their nutrition and weight requirements. We’ll reassess your pet’s plan every so often and make any appropriate modifications to be sure it’s supporting those changing needs as they occur.
You love your pet and you want what’s best for them. We share that same goal! Let us develop the perfect diet and exercise plan to bring out their very best!
